The sorry state of Anganwadi or childcare centres and the poor alternative arrangements made for the children are evident on one visit to Bihar. VV-PACS community correspondent Indu Devi from Begusarai district reports on the abysmal Anganwadi in her village Musadi which literally functions without a building. Parents in Musadi, have complained about sub-standard food being served to children. Villagers blame inaction of the district administration and the child development project officer for the sorry state of affairs. Children of the anganwadi centre at Musadi village just have a broken hut for shelter and the soaring mercury makes things difficult. Searing with the heat and smoke of the cooking chullah, offers no respite to the children. Anganwadi centres are poor children’s play school and unless proper arrangements are made many centres would stop functioning for want of buildings. Apart from children, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating mothers are also affected as these beneficiaries are unable to avail services. Till the policy makers and implementers do not address issue several mothers and Anganwadi workers like Manju Kumari face, the dream of a healthy India will remain trapped.
