A messy equation: 1 teacher 61 students

As we kick off "Pass Ya Fail", our campaign on Right to Education in India, this week we bring you compelling evidence on the lack of access to education in the country. VV-PACS Correspondent Sanjay reports on how the students are losing out on quality education because of a teacher shortage in the Kajori Primary and Secondary School in Uttar Pradesh. The RTE act states that all schools should maintain a teacher student ratio of 1:30. For over a year one single teacher has tried to look after the needs of 61 students in his school. While his efforts are laudable, he cannot do much about the poor quality of education these children get. "I teach 13 subjects. When I go to one class, the other two are empty. What am I to do?" he asks. You can ensure that he gets the support he needs. Call to Action: Please call the District Magistrate on 0552222054 and ask him to ensure that more teachers are appointed to this school About the Partnership: The Poorest Areas Civil Society (PACS) Programme and Video Volunteers have come together to create the Community Correspondents Network. The videos generated by the network will be able to highlight voices from the margins, providing skills to social communicators to provide advocacy tools to community based organisations.
