India has the largest number of landless households in the world. This only makes the fight against poverty a tougher challenge. VV-PACS Community Correspondent Mahesh Kumar from Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh reports on the plight of landless poor in Saizadpur village.
‘I told the Village Head to give us a piece of land or a house to stay but he did not listen to us. In Saizadpur only the wealthy get all benefits not the poor’ says Abdul Karim. ‘I am staying in someone else’s house. We have to face many problems. They can ask us to leave anytime’ says Nishad.
What needs to be understood here is the importance of involving local communities and adapting solutions to the needs of the people affected. Another important aspect which can’t be ignored is to overcome sometimes powerful vested interests & government policy, which in manifold ways affects the outcomes in this field.
Call to Action: You can help by calling Poonam Devi, Village Head, Saizadpur village, Kaushabi district, Uttar Pradesh on 09580942007 and ask her to allot a piece of land to all the landless families in Saizadpur village.
About the Partnership: The Poorest Areas Civil Society (PACS) Programme and Video Volunteers have come together to create the Community Correspondents Network. The videos generated by the network will be able to highlight voices from the margins, providing skills to social communicators to provide advocacy tools to community based organizations.
