India has the largest number of landless households in the world. This only makes the fight against poverty a tougher challenge. VV-PACS Community Correspondent Mahesh Kumar from Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh reports on the plight of landless poor in Saizadpur village. ‘I told the Village Head to give us a piece of land or a house to stay but he did not listen to us. In Saizadpur only the wealthy get all benefits not the poor’ says Abdul Karim. ‘I am staying in someone else’s house. We have to face many problems. They can ask us to leave anytime’ says Nishad. What needs to be understood here is the importance of involving local communities and adapting solutions to the needs of the people affected. Another important aspect which can’t be ignored is to overcome sometimes powerful vested interests & government policy, which in manifold ways affects the outcomes in this field.
