Our correspondent Asha informs us how despite the landlord system being abolished, land is still held by landlords. Residents like the Dalits of Sagarpur village are unable to own the land they reside on. Landlords hid the details of their lands before legislation was implemented, disabling any means of land acquisition by the residents.
Residents informed Asha that they cannot have identity cards unless they own their land and they cannot access any benefits of various schemes run by the government such as Indira Awaas Yojana (housing), old age pension and ration. Thus the situation impacts many aspects of their life. Coming from impoverished backgrounds they do not have access to resources or anyone who can represent them.
Having spoken to our Correspondent we learnt that residents have tried to complain about this issue to the Village Head, Block District Officer and Circle Officer many times without success. They have actually received threats and told to go away.
