Our Community Correspondent, Sanjay Kumar, reports from the pre-middle school of Hardi Dali Village in Mahrajganj district of Uttar Pradesh, which has 213 students but no hand-pump to supply water to students and staff.

CALL TO ACTION: You can call the District Collector of Maharajganj district, on 05522222206, and demand that the school receives the hand-pump that they so desperately need to comply with the RTE Act.

The children have to go beyond school premises to the community hand-pump to drink water, where they often face abuse from the residents. This is a clear violation of the RTE Act, which assures provision of basic infrastructure to schools under the Act. School authorities claim that they have highlighted the problem in annual reports to the Education Department since 2008, but to no avail.
