Forest Ranger of Shot Dead by a Timber Smuggling Ikhwan in Kashmir

Forest Ranger Ghulam Mohammed Khan of Kangan Ganderbal, Kashmir, was picked up by Nazir Gurra, an infamous renegade from Ikhwan, a pro-government militia in Jammu and Kashmir, on June 1999. Few hours later his family heard a few gunshots nearby which claimed his life. The slain ranger’s body was found barely half a kilometer away from his home after being picked up. Gurra, was an active timber smuggler of the area at that time who had been extorting timber from the Khan in the past. However, when Khan refused to provide Gurra anymore timber, he paid the price with his life.

Khan’s brother, Abdul Ahad filed an FIR against the accused but police closed the FIR without providing any reasons for the same. The Ikhwan have since then constantly threatened the family whenever they chose to take legal action against Gurra. It has been 18 years since Khan's gruesome death, but the family still fear for their lives from the Ikhwan.
