One hundred and seventy-two families in Kaliwas Village of Rajasthan got toilets, but they exist only on paper. During 2003-2004, 172 BPL (Below Poverty Line) families of Kaliwas village were sanctioned funds for toilets. According to official records, these toilets were built, but the reality is a far cry from what is written on these official papers. The courrpt constructor did not build any of these toilets. As a result of this, the residents of the village still have to defecate out in open. Sights of men, women and children carrying cans of water to nearby hills or jungles in the early hours of the morning is not a rare sight in rural India. In addition to unhygienic conditions, they are also threatened by wild animals, especially once it’s dark. Though there are many schemes made available by the Indian Government to help the rural poor build toilets for themselves, corruption at various levels ensures that these funds do not reach its beneficiaries.
