Lone Teacher Manages School

Flouting govt education norms, a primary school in rural Chattisgarh runs with a lone teacher. The primary school in Pangri village in correspondent of this video Bhan Sahu’s district Rajnandgao was set up under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) - a special programme to provide universal elementary education to community-run schools. The programme clearly says that there should be “At least two teachers in a Primary school” and “two class rooms with verandah to every Primary school with at least two teachers”.

But the school of Pangri village in Rajnandgaon district has had 1 teacher for the entire school. This lone teacher has to teach all subjects to students from class 1 to class 5.

The same teacher also has to attend special govt duties such as vigilance during elections. Whenever he is away on such duties, the school stays shut which happens several times a year.

As a result of this, students in the school hardly get any education. Each class gets only about 1 lesson a day.

Some students have left the school to join private schools outside the village.

But Bhan Sahu says, most people in Pangri village live bellow poverty line. As they can’t afford to pay fees of private schools, their children are forced to attend the village govt school although they learn little.

According to the govt records, Rajnandgaon district , spread oover 692 villages, has a rural literacy of 76%.But Bhan Sahu who fights for the basic rights of people in Rajnandgaon, questions the  quality of education those 76% received. She is doubtful of how helpful this education will be to get them a livelihood.

Bhan Sahu wants the district administration to follow the SSA rules and appoint more teachers for Pangri village school, so the students can get proper education.
