Lockdown Grinds Chattisgarh’s Rural Economy to Halt

The lockdown has severely hit small scale vendors like street food stall owners and farm labourers in Chattisgarh's Raigarh district.

Our community correspondent Rajesh Gupta sends us this ground report from Turenga village in Raigarh.

In the absence of any work or customers, these small vendors are at home without any monetary support to fend for themselves or their families.

Until now they have been managing with the relief ration provided to them by the administration. But as the lockdown enters its fourth phase, the financial condition of such people with very limited means is worrisome.

The hardest hit is those like Uddhav Sidar from Turenga who are also differently-abled and have not received any government help supporting their physical condition.

If the lockdown continues without any active government support to these daily wagers, they would die sooner of hunger instead of COVID 19 infections.
