Domestic violence during the time of COVID-19 lockdown has shot up many times. The World Health Organisation has declared it as a silent pandemic. In India, many labourers and daily wage workers migrate to bigger cities for work and have returned to their villages and small towns during the lockdown. Hence domestic clashes are rampant and sometimes turn fatal for the victim.
Community correspondent Krishna Mondal reports from West Bengal's Sagar Thana village in South 24 Parganas district where a case of domestic violence leading to death has shocked the local community. Tamna Bibi's husband tied her hands, stuffed her mouth with cloth, sprinkled kerosene on her and burnt her alive in front of their four year old son.
Villagers of the area say that the police tried to secretly cremate and dispose off the body to destory evidence when they were confronted by them. Local women organisations say that police neither went to the crime scene for investigation nor did they take Tamna Bibi's statement before she died. Even a FIR has not been registered yet!
