Self help groups in Uttar Pradesh's Siddharthnagar district have enabled several women to start and run their own businesses. These self-help groups, running under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), provide interest-free micro loans to women who are willing to become financially independent.

"I started a canteen selling snacks by taking a loan of Rs. 25,000 from my block's self-help group. Today, I earn between Rs. 8,000 to 10,000 every month and also got felicitated by the local Member of Legislative Assembly," said Seema Giri.

The assistance provided under the NRLM recognises ventures such as bee-keeping, grocery stores, cosmetics, fisheries, auto rickshaw, eateries, mushroom production, online application centres, candle/incense stick making etc. 40 among such ventures run successfully by women of Dumariyaganj and other areas under Siddharthnagar district were also felicitated by the local MLA Raghavendra Pratap Singh. They were given a certificate of appreciation and a shawl to encourage their efforts. The plan is to recognise more such women who are running successful businesses funded by self help groups and make them financially independent.
