Ap eaceful home welcoming turned violent leading to around 70 people injured most of them women.
More than 5,000 Naga protesters gathered at Mao, a border town in Manipur adjoining Nagaland to welcome Thuingaleng Muivah, the general secretary of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland. The NSCN has been fighting for a united Nagaland for many years. They believe that all Naga communities that were forced to settle in neighbouring areas of Assam and Manipur should now be reunited under Nagaland. Thuingaleng Muivah has been fighting for the past 27 years for this cause and has been taking shelter in the forests of Nagaland. He finally decided to come out and visit his home town in Manipur.
At the news of his returning home many supporters of Muivah flocked to the border to welcome the separatist leader. They tried to break the security barrier that was imposed to stop his entrance to the state. This prompted the security forces to break the crowd that gathered and they used smoke bombs, tear gas, and gun fire to do so. This resulted in at least 70 injured, most of them women.
