Our community correspondent Rejan Guria from Khunti district of Jharkhand reports the story of the daily deprivations of a widow & her children.

In Jharkhand's Torpa block, Chatakpur village, Hindu Soy lost his life after suffering from a sunstroke while working on construction of a well under the MGNREGA scheme. Leaving behind his wife Sushila Soy and four children to survive. The government officials promised Sushila the benefits of Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme & Indira Awas Yojana. She ran from pillar to post to get the benefits but the authorities turned a deaf ear to her pleadings.

While most Indian states do have pension schemes for widows above a certain age. While the pension is less than Rs 150, the bureaucratic requirements are bountiful. Dead men, it is said, tell no tales. But they do leave a trail.
