Trucks, Lies and a Videotape

Sagar, a daily wage labourer in Gujarat often travels away from his family over eight months at a time in search of work. He was recently cheated out of a job in his village that could have earned him money and kept him close to his family. Community Correspondent Bipin Solanki reports from Gujarat on a case that reeks of corruption in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Budgeted at 5 crores and hoping to provide employment to 243 people, the road to Relani was to be a MGNREGS project. But as Bipin's video documents, the project was taken over by a corrupt village headman who used machines to do the work and siphoned off large sums of money that were to be used to pay wage labourers. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme was envisioned with the multiple purposes of building rural infrastructure while simultaneously providing jobs to people. The corrupt officials need to be held accountable. Make sure they are. Call to Action: Please call the Block Development Officer Mr Shah on 09712200857 and ask him to look into the matter.
